Baracao has been divided by the
shock declaration of martial law by Chairman Alarico Veto Cgulia.
With just a week to go before the introduction of the nation's Third Constitution, he took everyone by surprise by invoking the
Martial Law Act, justifying his actions on the grounds of a threat to national security.
Chairman Cguila stated that "Our internal security mechanisms have indicated a threat to the present and future well-being of the Republic of Baracão. In the light of this threat to our National security, I am of the opinion that a declaration of Martial Law is the only viable course of action."
While the measure has been supported by some citizens, others have denounced it as the government has refused to state the nature of the threats and appears to be rapidly be turning into a dictatorship. One citizen said: "How can action be taken when the public is left in the dark under a under an instant and overnight dictatorship? Let the people know what is happening. This is a people's republic, yet we remain in the dark."
During the period of martial law, the Chairman will be Antonio Vitores Ramon. A smooth transition to the Third Constitution is still anticipated by political observers, barring any unforeseen 'incidents'.
